State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Oregon (SERV-OR) COURSE

We are excited to offer another round of the Basic and the Advanced Disaster Life Support classes. These trainings offer some great knowledge, skills, and opportunities to meet fellow volunteers and colleagues. All classes are offered free of charge in multiple locations around Oregon. See the course descriptions below for prerequisites, content, and CEUs.

DATES: March to May, 2012.

LOCATIONS: The Dalles, Prineville, Portland, Roseburg, and Sherwood, Springfield.

CALL FOR ADDITIONAL ROLEPLAYERS: Additional non-medical volunteers are needed to roleplay as victims in some courses. This is a fun opportunity for individuals and groups to help their community and help medical providers learn how to respond to disasters.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BASIC DISASTER LIFE SUPPORT

Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) course is a review of the all-hazards topics including natural and accidental human made events, traumatic and explosive events, nuclear and radiological events, biological events, and chemical events. Also included is information on the health care professional’s role in the public health and incident management systems, community mental health, and special needs of under-served and vulnerable populations. The recognition and management of the disaster scene and victims are reinforced. Course credits: 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits

Pre-requisites: None.  Open to all professions.  However, preference may be given to members of Medical Reserve Corps units or the State Managed Volunteer Pool. (Not already a member? Learn more and apply: http://go.usa.gov/nDg )

ADVANCED DISASTER LIFE SUPPORT

Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS) is an advanced practicum course for the trained BDLS® provider. It is an intensive, 2-day course that allows students to demonstrate competencies in casualty decontamination, specified essential skills, and mass casualty incident information systems/technology applications. Includes disaster scene simulation with live simulated victims.  Course credits: 15.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits

Pre-requisites: Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) and an active healthcare provider license.   Additionally, preference may be given to members of Medical Reserve Corps units or the State Managed Volunteer Pool. (Not already a member? Learn more and apply: http://go.usa.gov/nDg)

VOLUNTEERS ROLE PLAYERS NEEDED

Additional volunteer are needed to role play as victims on the second day of the Advanced courses. This is a fun opportunity for anyone to help their community and medical providers learn how to respond to disasters.  The class you will be supporting is Advanced Disaster Life Support, an intensive course that allows students to demonstrate competencies in casualty decontamination, essential skills, and mass casualty incident information systems/technology applications.  Volunteer “victims” will be put in makeup with simulated wounds.  Students in the course will then get to practice dealing with large numbers of injured people.  It will be a great opportunity to help the community prepare for emergencies, try out some acting skills, and meet other volunteers.  Food provided.
